In 2008, Bt crops occupied an area of 43 million hectares out of the global transgenic area of 125 million hectares. Since the introduction of Bt Cotton cultivation in India (2002), there has been tremendous controversy about the introduction of GM crops in India. The recent public confrontation on commercialization of Bt-Brinjal in India once again compelled the Govt. of India to review the situation for commercialization of any GM crops from stand point of study of long term impact evaluation with respect to socio economic and environmental perspectives.
